Virtual and augmented reality have seen huge growth over the past few years, thanks in large part to accessible and mainstream devices like the Oculus Quest 2.
This popular headset has sold over 20 million units since launching in 2020. Now, Meta is looking to bring VR to even more people with their newly announced Meta Quest 3.
As detailed in Meta's official press release, the Quest 3 delivers key upgrades like higher resolution displays, stronger performance via an advanced Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, and a slimmer design for greater comfort. It also incorporates Meta's latest mixed reality tech for blending physical and virtual worlds.
With these enhancements, Meta hopes to drive mass adoption beyond what Quest 2 achieved. 10 to 15 million lifetime sales also seems feasible for Quest 3 if Meta can expand its content libraries and offer continuous software updates. Meta even announced that existing Quest headsets will receive performance upgrades soon, keeping them relevant alongside the new Quest 3.
At $499 starting price, the Quest 3 delivers cutting-edge VR and MR in a single wireless package. This accessible price point and feature set could make it the breakthrough device that brings the next wave of consumers into immersive realities. Meta is banking on VR/AR being integral to the future of work, entertainment, communication and beyond.
While competition is heating up in the VR space, Meta's early leadership with Oculus and massive community gives them an advantage. The Quest brand is now widely recognized as the gateway into premium virtual experiences. If Meta executes well, the Quest 3 may end up selling closer to the high end of projections.
We'll learn more details on the Quest 3 at Meta's upcoming Connect conference on September 27. But it's clear Meta is aggressively pursuing the future of immersive tech. The Quest 3 looks to be their biggest step yet in making VR/AR a mainstream staple
